1985 NFL Season

I will be replaying the 1985 AFL/NFL season with the recently released card set sold by APBA. The replay will consist of 224 regular season games and nine playoff games including Super Bowl XX. I will be using the Master game booklet and will limit Rare Plays to one per game per situation:

  • Run Plays (RP1 – 4)
  • Pass Plays (RP5 – 8)
  • Kicks (RP9-10)
  • Placekicking (RP11 – 13)
  • Returns (RP14 – 17)
  • Punts (RP18 – 20)

As noted previously, I’ve replayed this season once before using a card set created by my best friend, Mr. Mark Zarb. So why play it again? Simple, it’s a season that featured most likely the greatest defensive team of all-time, Chicago Bears, Roger Craig become the first player ever to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving, the Cleveland Browns had a tandem (Mack/Byner) both eclipsing 1,000 yards rushing and the opportunity to roll with several great signal callers in their prime (Marino, Elway, Montana, Fouts, etc).

My beloved Jets earned an 11-5-0 record and a trip to the postseason. The Jets defense was coordinated by Bud Carson and finished with the 8th rated defense (yardage) and 3rd rated in points allowed. They only allowed 94.7 rushing yards per game and finished with 48 sacks. On offense, Freeman McNeil ran for 1,331 yards in 14 games, they finished as the 4th best offense (yardage) and 7th in points scored. Ken O’Brien became the first Jet to ever win the passing title with a 96.2 QB rating.
