….I know, I know, another 1970 replay. It will be hard to replicate the job Greg and Joe did with their respective replays of 1970 (Bengals and Raiders won respectively) but 70 was such a seminal season in NFL lore that I had to give this one a shot. It will be my 11th replay.
Major difference between this replay and the ones conducted by Greg and Joe is that I will be using my own card set. As always, I have rated all the teams for Ints/Sacks, Forced fumbles, fumble recovery rate, penalties and third downs (I went through every gamebook counting to get team third down percentages for and against. Filled in the blanks using a best guess for gamebooks that were missing). While the NFL.com site had stats for kickoffs and touchbacks I went through each gamebook to estimate kickoff yardage as well.
A couple of additional things that I will be following:
1. Any 4th down incomplete pass attempted at or inside the opponents 5 yard line will be considered incomplete in the end zone and the ball will be brought out to the 20 yard line (the actual NFL rule was applied to ALL 4th down passes that were incomplete in the end zone, so a 45 yard pass int the end zone on 4th down came out to the 20 as well, I am limiting its application to 5 YL and in).
2. For missed field goals of 37 yards or greater (so the 30 to 39 and 40 to 49 YL columns), where the board result lists a yardage number the kick travels the yardage stated and can be returned by either the OA or OB. All other miss results are considered touchbacks.
Finally, I typically report out on each game including the Actual score, for this replay I will also be reporting out the actual score from Greg and Joe’s replays as well. I thought it would be a fun comparison.
Shorter schedule and less plays per game than my previous three replays so hope to get this done relatively quick. Would love to have you all on for the ride.
