Boyd’s 1997 Replay – Game #59 – Detroit at Green Bay

Packers hold off Lions to stay undefeated!

In a wild shoot-out for three quarters, the Packers and the Lions traded blow after blow in front of a sold-out crowd inside the Pontiac Silverdome. The Packers Brett Favre and the Lions’ Barry Sanders showed the football world that they are indeed the elite players at their positions. Favre threw the ball all over the field and Barry Sanders ran all over the Packers for three quarters. Then…the Packers defense stepped up. Reggie White and Co. corralled Sanders and held him to just 12 yards in the 4th quarter. Meanwhile, Favre hit Bill Schroeder with a huge 35-yd gain to put the Packers in scoring position. Rookie placekicker Ryan Longwell booted a 23-yd field goal with 5:15 to play. Lions QB Scott Mitchell tried to rally the Lions, but DT Santana Dotson sacked Mitchell thwarting any Lions chances at winning the game. The Packers are now 5-0 and will face Tampa Bay at Lambeau next week in a battle of the unbeatens. The Lions fall to 3-2.
