Saints’ defense shuts down the Giants
One of the surprises of the 1997 campaign has been the New Orleans Saints. They are off to a 3-2 start after their 24-17 victory over the New York Giants at Giants’ Stadium on Sunday. The Saints’ stunning start has nothing to do with QB Heath Shuler, even though he was a part of 3 TDs. The Saints defense has been outstanding. On Sunday, they held the Giants to 174 total yards and only a field goal. It was the offense and special teams that made the mistakes. The Giants’ two TDs came off a pick-six and a punt return. Other than that, the Saints D dominated the day holding the Giants’ to only 58 yards on the ground. LB Mark Fields had a career day with 3 sacks and a forced fumble. On offense, Heath Shuler did just enough. He threw for 228 yards and 2 TDs, and he also ran one in, but he threw 3 INTs in the process. The Giants are now 2-3.
