Boyd’s 1997 NFL Replay – Game 63 – Baltimore at Chargers

The Chargers blow the game! Ravens win in OT!

The San Diego faithful thought their beloved Chargers were finally going to get into the win column in the 1997 campaign. The Chargers had a 33-23 lead with under a minute left in the game. Eric Metcalf returned 2 punts for touchdowns, and he had Qualcolmm stadium rocking; however, on one of those returns, Greg Davis missed an extra point. That one point proved costly as the improbable happened. Ravens QB Vinny Testaverde hit Eric Green for a 24-yd TD pass to cut the lead to 33-30 with only 30 seconds remaining. Then…the Ravens recovered an onside kick at the SD 40-yd line. Testaverde threw a short completion, and the Ravens were in FG range. Matt Stover drilled a 47-yd kick, and the game went into OT. The Ravens won the coin toss and Testaverde, who threw for 364 yards, marched the Ravens into FG position, where Stover drilled a 32-yd kick to win the game, 36-33 in OT.
