Boyd’s 1997 Replay Game 104 (Week 8) NY Giants at Detroit

Are the Lions contenders or pretenders?

The Detroit Lions are looking more and more like contenders as they pummeled the New York Giants, 37-17, in the Silverdome on Sunday. Can anyone match the Lions’ talent of Barry Sanders, Herman Moore and now Johnny Morton?

Sanders continued on his quest for 2,000 yards as he rushed for 133 yards and 2 TDs. Sanders now has 1,111 yards through 8 games. He also has 10 rushing TDs this season.

Morton had 10 catches and 177 yards in this game including a 61-yard bomb from QB Scott Mitchell. On the season, Morton’s partner in crime Herman Moore has 56 catches on the season and is on pace for 112. Morton is on pace for 92 and both receivers will eclipse the 1,000 yard mark this season if they continue at this pace.

The Lions (6-2) will have a chance to answer their critics as they will face the Packers in 2 weeks after their bye at Lambeau Field on Sunday Night.

As for the Giants (4-4), they continue to fight for the top of the NFC East standings. They will host the Bengals next week and then will have their bye.
