Updated “Method of Play”

I’ve updated my Method of Play presentation to not only reflect my current methodology using the Master Game booklet, but to introduce modifications or workarounds that address unrealistic board results, rare situations that occur to frequently, mitigation steps for game engine issues, and techniques that improve playability to bring results more in line with actual statistics. I also wanted to share the new formula (excel spreadsheet) for “Keying/Double Coverage” that offsets poorly rated defenses that excelled in either run or pass defense (i.e., 2010 Chargers 34/34 defense was #1 ranked; 1970 N.Y. Jets 31/33 was a top 5 defense with #2 run defense, etc.)”

I’ve also conducted housecleaning of the “Method of Play” section and removed obsolete presentations and posted supporting files that augment my current method of play.

  1. Greg,

I like the new keying adjustment. I do something similar in my method of play. Be careful at least when adjusting the run game keying because Fletch67and the Floating Index have their own impact on the defensive side of the ball as I know you know. Unless I’m missing something, it looks as if this new keying adjustment doesn’t account for the total defensive points against the run. I track every play in my replays, and I have detailed breakdowns of how the defensive ratings impact the defensive stats. I have numbers from my most recent replay that show a team with a run defense of 30 will give up about 1 more yard per carry than a run defense of 40 when there is no keying in effect. I understand what you are trying to do here as APBA at least lately doesn’t seem to get the team run defensive points right. I’d be happy to share my results if you are interested.

p.s. Your Jets dealt my Bengals a brutal loss today. Congrats, I guess 🙂

    • It does take into account the total defensive points but there is a run defense cap which is a Fletch cap of 41 and bottom of 31. Greg and I have found that to work properly based on our empirical evidence. The keying is in addition to that. Completely agree that APBA’s grading system does not capture team run, or for that matter team pass defense right.

  2. Dan,
I’m very happy with the results but would always love to see your information. Shoot me an email if you don’t mind. The old keying method was driven off of defensive rating, this does not, and for the better, at least that’s what my data tells me.

  3. Bro, this is AWESOME!!! Even though I use this almost exact method and for the most part have it memorized I am going to print it out and keep it handy. Appreciate your contributions to this wonderful hobby. MZ
