Saints outduel the Falcons
The New Orleans Saints have been the surprise team of the 1st half of the 1997 season. With their 30-20 victory over the Falcons in the Superdome on Sunday, New Orleans is now 5-2 on the season and atop the NFC West standings.
The Saints got into a scoring duel with the Falcons and surprisingly came out on top. Heath Shuler, marred by an injury, gave way to the Billy Jo Hobert, but combined, the two QBs were 18-30 for 250 yards and 2 TDs.
As for the Falcons, two costly turnovers prevented them from winning this game. Terrence Mathis fumbled the ball, which led to a Saints’ TD and then Chris Chandler threw an interception late in the game that led to a Saints’ FG to ice the game.
Next week, the Saints will have an NFC West opponent in the disappointing Carolina Panthers, while the Falcons take on the Niners in another NFC West clash.
