Seahawks beat Niners to take last playoff spot!

The Seattle Seahawks needed to defeat the San Francisco 49ers Sunday Night to earn a spot in the AFC playoffs and they did it with a 17-6 victory in the Kingdome.

The New York Jets opened the door earlier in the day when they lost to the Detroit Lions, so the Seahawks had a chance to win and get in. With the win, the Seahawks earned the #6 seed in the AFC playoffs and will travel to Cincinnati.

Coming into the game, the 49ers defense allowed only 82 yards on the ground on average. On Sunday, the Seahawks pounded the 49ers with 177 yards rushing, which is the most the 49ers gave up all season. Chris Warren rushed for 99 yards, while Lamar Smith rushed for 49 yards on six carries and had a back-breaking 26-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter to give the Seahawks a 14-3 lead.

For the 49ers, they still have the #2 seed in the NFC, despite the loss. They finished with the same record as the Washington Redskins, 11-5, but earned the tie breaker by having a better record against common opponents. They will have a bye in the Wildcard round of the playoffs.

The 49ers have been without running back Garrison Hearst the past three weeks and the 49ers were 1-2. Hearst led the 49ers in rushing with 1,067 yards and 10 TDs. According to reports, the 49ers could get Hearst back if they make it to the conference championship game.

Jets get a gift; Seahawks blow opportunity

The Seattle Seahawks were motivated going into their game Sunday afternoon against the Oakland Raiders at Oakland-Alameda Co. Coliseum. The New York Jets lost earlier in the day to Tampa Bay, so the Seahawks had a chance to control the final spot in the AFC playoff race heading into the final week.

Shockingly, the Seahawks blew their opportunity to take control of their playoff destiny as they lost 20-14 to the Raiders. Now the Seahawks need the Jets to lose to the Lions, and they must beat the 49ers to earn a playoff spot.

The Seahawks seemed to be in a primed position to go to the playoffs, but they lost starting QB Warren Moon last week to a hip injury and Moon did not play in this game either. Backup John Kitna took the snaps, and he didn’t play bad. He threw for 267 yards on 24 of 35 passing with two touchdowns.

It was the Raiders, who played outstanding. QB Jeff George has had an MVP-like season. He threw for 326 yards in this game on 21 of 30 passing with two touchdowns. On the season, George has thrown for 33 TDs and 4,242 yards. He also has only thrown three interceptions all season and has a 106.4 QB rating.

WR Tim Brown has been another MVP candidate. Brown caught 10 passes for 124 yards and two TDs. On the season, Brown is just three receptions from tying Herman Moore’s record for most receptions in a season at 123. Moore did it two years ago in 1995. On the season, Brown has caught 120 passes for 1,712 yards and nine TDs.

Moon goes down and so do the Seahawks!

The Seattle Seahawks came into the weekend as the #5 seed in the AFC playoff race with a 9-4 record. The Seahawks have won 7 of their last 8 games as they are one of the hottest teams in the NFL. They took on the Baltimore Ravens, who are 5-8 on the season. Why would anyone think the Hawks would lose to the Ravens? And that’s why we play the games!

Seahawk QB Warren Moon went down in the third quarter with bruised ribs leading 13-9 and that was all she wrote. Backup QB John Kitna came in and tossed the game away as he threw two crucial interceptions as the Ravens came back to win 18-13.

Trailing 13-12 late in the fourth quarter, punt returner Ronnie Harris fumbled and the Ravens recovered.  Ravens’ backup QB Eric Zeier took advantage of the situation and hit TE Eric Green on an 11-yard TD pass to give the Ravens a 18-13 lead with 2:30 left. However, Kitna threw his second pick to linebacker Cornell Brown to seal the game.

When Moon went out, he was 12 of 21 for 173 yards and a touchdown. Kitna came in and was 5 of 11 for 46 yards and two interceptions.

Zeier had a pretty good start as he was 22 of 36 for 272 yards and a touchdown. Derrick Alexander caught seven passes for 130 yards in the game.

The Seahawks will try to get things back on track next Sunday when they travel out to the Bay Area to take on the Raiders. Then they will finish the season at home against San Francisco on Sunday Night Football. The 6-8 Ravens will host Tennessee next weekend.
