Packers defense dominates in battle of unbeatens

A battle of unbeatens clashed Sunday afternoon as Tony Dungy brought his 5-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers into historic Lambeau Field to face the 5-0 Green Bay Packers. The Packers defense showed why they were ranked #1 last season as they shut down Dungy’s rushing offense. The Pack held the Bucs to 23 yards on the ground on 18 carries. They also harassed Trent Dilfer sacking him 4 times and causing him to throw a pick.

On the flip side, the Packers controlled the football the entire day. They had a decisive time of possession advantage controlling the ball for 39:00 minutes of the action. Dorsey Levens slashed through the Bucs defense rushing for 118 yards on 22 carries. The Pack got 4 field goals from rookie kicker Ryan Longwell and they won 19-9.

Brett Favre threw for 184 yards on 44 passing attempts. He threw a TD pass to William Henderson.

Next week, the Packers will try to sweep the Bears and stay undefeated as they travel to Soldier Field on Sunday. The Buccaneers will try to get back on track taking on Detroit in the Silver Dome.

Tampa Bay rallies to beat the Cards and stay undefeated!

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished the 1996 season winning five of their last seven games. Head Coach Tony Dungy has duplicated that success early in the 1997 campaign. In front of a sell-out crowd at Houlihan’s Stadium, Bucs rookie running back Warrick Dunn had the fans on their feet with an exciting 73-yard break-away touchdown run to put the Buccaneers ahead for the first time in the game 15-14 with 5 minutes to play. Errict Rhett ran in the two-point conversion and the Bucs took a 17-10 lead. The defense shut the Cardinals down the rest of the way. The Bucs are now 5-0 and will travel to Lambeau Field next week to take on the World Champion Packers. The Cards fell to 0-4.
