The American Football League (AFL) appealed to fans by offering a flashier style of play, compared to the more conservative game of the National Football League (NFL). Long passes (“bombs”) were commonplace in AFL offenses, led by such talented quarterbacks as John Hadl, Daryle Lamonica, Joe Namath, and Len Dawson. Well, I just rolled a “vintage” AFL shootout where there was 1134 total net yards of offense and 84 combined points.

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that John Hadl was one of the participates who completed 20 of 33 passes for 324 yards and 5 touchdowns in my latest 1967 replay game. However, it might come as a surprise who the opposing quarterback was that just completed 20 of 34 pass attempts for 513 yards with 4 touchdowns and only 1 interception and still lost the game. Was it the “Mad Bomber” or “Broadway Joe Willie Namath”? No, it was Steve “Stretch” Tensi of the Denver Broncos. This is what can happen when “scorching” hot dice meet the “Yards per Catch” innovation – MAGIC. If I wasn’t already addicted to the great game of APBA Football this would have done it!!

AFL Game 27

Sonny Jurgensen was 28 of 36 for 384 yards with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions to earn a quarterback rating of 127.5.

Fred Biletnikoff caught 3 passes for 126 yards resulting in an average of 42.0 yards per catch.  In addition, all of his receptions resulted in touchdowns.

For the second time this season, Daryle Lamonica is awarded AFL Player of the Week honors. Against the Jets, he completed 26 of 38 pass attempts for 355 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception resulting in a quarterback rating of 122.1.

Boyd Dowler had 13 catches for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Tight End, Paul Costa, averaged 23.1 yards per catch for a total of 185 yards.

Homer Jones averaged 40.7 yards per catch for a total of 244-yards and 3 touchdowns.

Dickie Post ran 16 times for 127  yards and scored 3 touchdowns resulting in an average of 7.9 per carry. In addition, he had 4 receptions for 23 yards and a touchdown.
