Davis overcomes bad day to kick the Chargers to first win

Greg Davis was having a horrible day. He missed three field goals as the winless Chargers battled it out against arch-rival the Oakland Raiders at Oakland-Alameda Co. Coliseum. Davis missed from 28, 42, and 48.

The Chargers found themselves down to the Raiders 23-21 late in the game. QB Stan Humphries got the ball back and he completed five passes in a row to get the Chargers into scoring position.  Humphries connected with Eric Metcalf for 25 yards, which set the Chargers up inside the Raiders 25-yard line.

The Chargers couldn’t go any further and they called on Davis to bail them out despite missing three earlier in the game. Davis lined it up and drilled it from 41-yards out to give the Chargers their first win of the season 24-23.

The Chargers are now 1-5 on the season. They got 263 yards passing from Humphries and 71 yards rushing from Greg Brown including 2 TDs. The Chargers will go into their bye.

The Raiders still got explosive offense from their big three. QB Jeff George threw for 252 yards and 2 TDs. Napolean Kaufman rushed for 136 yards and a TD. Tim Brown caught 7 passes for 123 yards and a 51-yd TD pass. The Raiders also go into their bye next week. Then they take on the Broncos.

Raiders finally get in the win column!

The Raiders have been awful in 1997, but it was no fault of new Raiders’ QB Jeff George. The flamethrower has had the best start to a season in his career and he didn’t disappoint Sunday afternoon in Oakland as the Raiders won their first game of the season, 34-23, over the now 2-3 St. Louis Rams.

George threw for 368 yards and 4 TDs to 4 different receivers. His 80-yard bomb to Ricky Dudley sealed the deal. On the season, George has 101 QB Rating through 5 games. He has over 1,400 yards passing, 11 TDs and no interceptions!

As for the Rams, they got a couple of TD strikes from Tony Banks, but they gave up 446 yards of total offense to the Raiders.
