Boyd’s 1997 Replay Game 104 (Week 8) NY Giants at Detroit

Are the Lions contenders or pretenders?

The Detroit Lions are looking more and more like contenders as they pummeled the New York Giants, 37-17, in the Silverdome on Sunday. Can anyone match the Lions’ talent of Barry Sanders, Herman Moore and now Johnny Morton?

Sanders continued on his quest for 2,000 yards as he rushed for 133 yards and 2 TDs. Sanders now has 1,111 yards through 8 games. He also has 10 rushing TDs this season.

Morton had 10 catches and 177 yards in this game including a 61-yard bomb from QB Scott Mitchell. On the season, Morton’s partner in crime Herman Moore has 56 catches on the season and is on pace for 112. Morton is on pace for 92 and both receivers will eclipse the 1,000 yard mark this season if they continue at this pace.

The Lions (6-2) will have a chance to answer their critics as they will face the Packers in 2 weeks after their bye at Lambeau Field on Sunday Night.

As for the Giants (4-4), they continue to fight for the top of the NFC East standings. They will host the Bengals next week and then will have their bye.

Giants’ Defense dominates the Cards

On Sunday, the Giants invaded the Arizona desert, and they left Sun Devil Stadium with their 4th win of the season. The Giants’ defense came to play, and they dominated the game in the 27-14 victory.

The Giants harassed Jeff Graham and then Jake Plumer, who entered the after Graham was injured. The Giants sacked Plummer six times, 3 from Bernard Holsey and 2.5 from Michael Strahan. They also intercepted Plummer twice with the second one sealing the game for the Giants when Tito Wooten picked off Plummer and raced 30 yards for the game-sealing TD.

The Giants also got 160 yards on the ground with 86 coming from Charlie Way and 76 from Tyrone Wheatley.

The Giants will travel to Detroit to try and slow down Barry Sanders, while the Cardinals will go to Philly to take on the Eagles to try and earn their first win of the season.
