Boyd’s 1997 NFL Replay Game 71 – Dallas at NY Giants

Giants pour it on the Cowboys

The New York Football Giants started fast. Dave Brown threw a 49-yd TD bomb to Chris Calloway. With Brown going down with a chest injury, Danny Kannell came in and he immediately hooked up with Calloway for a 17-yd TD pass to give the Giants a 14-0 lead over their arch-rivals, the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys defense controlled the rest of the game, and the Cowboys even took a 15-14 lead early in the 4th quarter when Emmitt Smith plunged in the end zone from a yard out. However, on the final drive, the Giants rallied behind Kannell and he threw a bomb to Calloway from 44 yards out to give the Giants a 22 to 15 lead with 45 seconds left.

Cowboys’ QB Troy Aikman tried to rally the Cowboys, but Giants SS Sam Garnes picked off Aikman and raced 54 yards as the final gun went off giving the Giants the 29-15 victory and pouring salt in the wounds of their arch-rivals. The Giants improved to 3-3, while the Cowboys fall to 3-2 on the season.

Saints’ defense shuts down the Giants

One of the surprises of the 1997 campaign has been the New Orleans Saints. They are off to a 3-2 start after their 24-17 victory over the New York Giants at Giants’ Stadium on Sunday. The Saints’ stunning start has nothing to do with QB Heath Shuler, even though he was a part of 3 TDs. The Saints defense has been outstanding. On Sunday, they held the Giants to 174 total yards and only a field goal. It was the offense and special teams that made the mistakes. The Giants’ two TDs came off a pick-six and a punt return. Other than that, the Saints D dominated the day holding the Giants’ to only 58 yards on the ground. LB Mark Fields had a career day with 3 sacks and a forced fumble. On offense, Heath Shuler did just enough. He threw for 228 yards and 2 TDs, and he also ran one in, but he threw 3 INTs in the process. The Giants are now 2-3.
